Unlike individual therapy, group counseling offers multiple opinions from different people around the ways we relate to others. Such feedback can be invaluable, especially if relationships have been a sticking point in one’s life.

Group therapy is a powerful form of therapy in which a small number of people meet under the guidance of a professionally trained therapist where the focus is on exploring one’s real self and your feelings that are stimulated by the relationships in the room (which will inevitably mirror the relationship dynamics and feelings that arise outside of group therapy).

The dynamics of group provides a confidential environment to understand yourself in relationship to others. What we strive to see is people putting their thoughts and feelings into words by talking to each other about relevant aspects of their life and how they feel with each other moment to moment.  Through this process you will receive valuable honest feedback as well as learn about your reactions to others; something that will benefit your other relationships outside of groups.

Group generally meets weekly, for about 60-120 minutes, both in-person and online. The time commitment depends on the type of group and the extent of your goals. Group counseling is a great way to learn how to relate to others better, be yourself, and form authentic and meaningful bonds with others.

What is group therapy?

How does group work?

Group therapy works in a variety of ways. One way is through the facilitation and shared insights of the therapist who is the group leader. But perhaps even better are the reactions and feedback received from group members.

Group therapy also offers an opportunity to expand qualities such as patience, acceptance, and empathy for a broad range of individuals. You learn how to understand and relate to those whose personalities we may generally struggle with in life. You may even form attachments much like in a family of diverse individuals.

You can expect the confluence of race, class, and gender, as well feeling the effects of the present and the past. The group space helps you to explore and define how you show up in many of these areas.

Group counseling can benefit people of different ages, sexual orientations, gender identities, and cultural and ethnic backgrounds who want help with connecting more authentically within and without. Most of our thinking and behavior have some connection to past or present relationships and how one feels about oneself, others, and one’s life because of those relationships.

Maybe you’ve reached a point where you’re ready to be more authentic and vulnerable by sharing your story in an affirmative space where you’ll be seen and validated. From anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, communication, or conflict avoidance to repetitively choosing the wrong partner for you, processing and understanding your relational experience in real-time is a powerful opportunity for change.

A group is a fantastic way to access relationship patterns and feelings toward oneself in relationships that are the source of the presenting concern. Whatever you are facing, regularly talking and listening to others helps you put your problems in perspective.

Who can benefit from group therapy?

Joining a group of strangers may initially sound intimidating, but group therapy provides benefits that individual therapy may not. Group members are almost always surprised by how rewarding the group experience can be.
